MAY 9 – 31, 2024
9:00 AM – 3:00 PM daily
Kalayaan Hall, Philippine Center
447 Sutter St, San Francisco (Behind Union Square)
In celebration this May of National Heritage Month in the Philippines and Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in the United States, the Philippine Consulate General and Sentro Rizal San Francisco invite you to the opening of the solo exhibition of Bay Area-based Filipino tattoo artist Jeff Maronilla-Seva Quintano titled, “Bagong Liwanag 2: Baybayin Tattoos.”
The “Bagong Liwanag” (“New Light”) exhibition, which was first mounted at the Sentro Filipino (San Francisco Filipino Cultural Center) last January 2024, aims to shine a positive light on tattooing and its pivotal role in the revival of baybayin, one of the ancient scripts of the Philippines. It also highlights a people's effort to connect to their Filipino roots and represent their culture in America.
The exhibition launch will feature remarks by Philippine Consul General Neil Ferrer, and a premiere of Quintano’s documentary on baybayin tattoo art.
This exhibition will run at the Philippine Center’s Kalayaan Hall until 31 May 2024 — with a closing event that will feature a screening of the documentary “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Mambabatok” (“The Woman Behind the Tattooist”), featuring renowned Kalinga tattoo artist Whang-od.

About Asian American Storytellers in Action (AASIA)
In 2020, when the world shut down and anti-Asian violence increased, a group of Asian American storytellers began meeting to provide support and friendship to one another. From this beginning, Asian American Storytellers in Action grew into a collective whose mission is to promote and celebrate Asian American culture and heritage through the art of storytelling. Their YouTube channel, Asian American Storytopia, features Asian folktales and activities for elementary school students in grades K-5, their families, and all story lovers. 31ST ANNUAL PISTAHAN PARADE AND FESTIVAL
AUGUST 10 – 11, 2024
The Filipino American Arts Exposition (FAAE) is a vital part of the rich tapestry of cultures and ethnic communities of the San Francisco Bay Area through its promotion of Filipino American art, music, film, dance, cuisine, history, and more. FAAE celebrates its ancestral heritage and contemporary traditions, broadening awareness and deepening the understanding of Filipino history, achievements, and culture.
The Pistahan Parade and Festival was founded by FAAE in 1994 after more than 4,000 Filipino families were displaced to accommodate the redevelopment of the Moscone Convention Center, the Metreon and the Yerba Buena Gardens Complex. The Pistahan was born out of the community's activism to honor and preserve the enduring legacy of the Filipino American community's struggles, triumphs and deep roots in SOMA Pilipinas: Filipino Cultural Heritage District. The Pistahan was the first outdoor event at the Yerba Buena Gardens and after 31 years, it continues to be a beacon of cultural preservation and celebration.
Follow FAAE at www.pistahan.net and on Facebook and Instagram (pistahanSF).
